Opening of Matter Barcelona

On 19 October 2017 we held the opening party for Matter Barcelona, at Can Segalar 6-8. We were joined by more than 600 guests from the architecture and interior design sector, wonderful people who made the event a real success.

In this account we look at what the space we opened at the time was like, the music that accompanied the evening and a selection of pictures from the night.

A materials showroom for architects and interior designers

Matter was born as a materials showroom dedicated to architecture and interior design professionals. When it opened it had more than 800 m² devoted to displaying bathrooms, natural woods and ceramics, as well as a large technical space, with meeting rooms, conceived as an extension of the architect's own office.

The idea was to be able to explore, touch and combine materials —their tones, textures, weight and original formats— in the same place where the project is worked on. This is how we described its spaces on our website in the months after the opening:

• Bathroom showroom: an open, light-filled space on the ground floor, organised into settings with sanitaryware, bathroom furniture, accessories and shower screens.
• Natural woods: an area devoted exclusively to natural wood parquet, with a wide range of finishes and formats.
• Professional ceramics library: a private space with an extensive selection of ceramics organised by appearance, to choose the most suitable one for each project.
• Meeting rooms: equipped with screens for presenting images and drawings, and with panels for displaying the selection of materials; they can be booked to present the project to the client.

Our team is made up of architects and interior designers, people passionate about design, able to offer technical advice for each project. With this concept, new to Barcelona at the time, we wanted to create a point of reference that would bring work and inspiration together in one place, and the opening event was a first step in that direction.

Live jazz with Eva Fernández Group

The evening was accompanied by the jazz band Eva Fernández Group, who played live for all the guests.

Eva Fernández, a Catalan saxophonist and singer, made her name in Joan Chamorro's Sant Andreu Jazz Band and leads her own group, with a repertoire of classic and contemporary jazz.

During the night, guests toured the bathroom settings and stopped in front of the large-format ceramic pieces on display in the showroom.

What came next

A few months later, on 15 March 2018, we held the first Talks that Matter, on the theme Women Matter, with which we opened the Sala Matter, the showroom's space for gatherings. Today, in 2026, Matter has spaces in Barcelona (C/ Can Segalar, 6-8) and Madrid (C/ Claudio Coello, 55).
