BUTO: luxury and sustainability in the bathroom

BUTO offers bathroom furniture collections focused on sustainability, product quality and materiality, with its own manufacturing process that gives priority to Spanish craftsmanship and the culture of the “hand made”. The company, based in Alicante, designs and makes customised and made-to-measure bathroom furniture, and works with architects and interior designers from the conceptual stage of each project.

In this article we focus on Galiano, one of its flagship collections: what the unit is like, which modules and accessories make it up, which finishes it accepts, what the manufacturer says about how it produces it and what to bear in mind when specifying it.

Galiano: luxury in a minimalist key

Galiano, signed by Buto Lab, the brand's design team, is presented in BUTO's catalogue as “luxury interpreted in a minimalist way”: a collection intended to give character to both classic and contemporary settings, with an idea of timeless refinement.

BUTO designs a unit with volumes softened by restrained curves, in wood or lacquer. A design that conveys a timeless sense of beauty and warmth. With the help of architecture and interior design professionals, the brand promotes a concept of the bathroom that stands apart from fashion, applying advanced technologies to achieve a sustainable, effective object with a great deal of personality.

Modules, side units and worktops

According to BUTO's general catalogue, Galiano is organised into wall-hung modules with two, three or four drawers, in symmetrical and asymmetrical versions, with rounded sides as its most recognisable feature. The drawer fronts have no handles, and the unit is completed with the following elements:

  • Pull-out side units: one or two curved side modules can be added, providing extra storage without altering the silhouette of the unit.
  • Worktops: a simple top with a countertop washbasin, or a top with an integrated single or double washbasin, in SolidSurface or marble.
  • Unit and worktop, matching or contrasting: the worktop can be chosen in the same finish as the unit or in white lacquer.
  • Mirrors: the backlit round-arch mirror is the one most associated with the collection; the catalogue also pairs it with frameless mirrors or mirrors with a black aluminium frame.

Wood, lacquer and marble: the finishes

Wood is the collection's main protagonist. Among the oak finishes in BUTO's range is Toasted Oak, which opts for an aesthetic of toasted shades, with earthy colours that evoke nature and the textures of tree bark, such as oak. With it, BUTO aims to create a sensory experience close to that of nature itself.

But Galiano is not only wood: the catalogue compositions show it in plain and fluted natural oak, in Brunette Oak, in walnut and also lacquered in matte colours from the range or in a custom RAL shade. The table summarises BUTO's finishes chart for its furniture collections.

Sustainability and craft manufacturing

The collection responds to one of the brand's basic principles: reducing environmental impact. According to BUTO, its aim is to optimise its environmental management systems to minimise the consumption of raw materials and the amount of waste and discharges at its offices and production sites. Along these lines, it seeks to create versatile luxury products with a minimalist, avant-garde touch, through the layering of organic forms and a subtle, discreet aesthetic. Less is more.

The other foundation is manufacturing. BUTO is committed to the tradition of Spanish manufacturing and combines craftsmanship with advanced technical and technological processes. For the brand, materials such as wood, glass and metal, together with skilled labour, are the basis of a product made to last, both in homes and in other types of installation.

The BUTO signature, and this furniture in particular, is designed to bring comfort to the bathroom: a convenient, easy closing system, durability over time thanks to the materials and meticulous technical treatment and, above all, a constant search to improve construction systems, relying on Spanish professionals and technicians, with a Mediterranean imprint.

Key points for specifying Galiano

Beyond aesthetics, these are the points worth resolving at design stage:

  • Composition before finish: first define the number of drawers, the symmetry of the module and whether one or two pull-out side units are added; storage capacity and how the unit reads on the wall depend on this.
  • Type of washbasin: countertop, in SolidSurface or marble, or integrated into the top, single or double. The choice determines the position of the taps and the mounting height of the unit.
  • Continuity or contrast: a worktop in the same finish as the unit for a monolithic reading, or in white lacquer to separate the planes.
  • Wall-hung unit: the wall must be prepared to bear the unit together with the worktop and washbasin; it is advisable to confirm the fixing system with the manufacturer and plan any reinforcement before the wall is finished.
  • Physical samples: according to BUTO, the shade of the lacquer, matte or gloss, may differ slightly from the colour chart; it is advisable to approve wood and lacquer with real samples.
