Avant-garde and elegant glazed washbasins

The Tino model from Cielo's Le Bacinelle collection is a ceramic countertop basin with which the Italian brand brings colour into the bathroom. It is designed by Andrea Parisio and Giuseppe Pezzano, Cielo's art directors, and reflects the values the company champions and for which it has received numerous international design awards: the excellence of Italian “making”, regarded as a benchmark for quality, choice of materials, attention to detail and a constant search for harmony between form and function.

In this article we look at what Tino is like and the dimensions it had in Cielo's 2021 catalogue, how its ceramic is coloured with the Le Terre di Cielo and Le Acque di Cielo palettes, which other bowls made up the Le Bacinelle collection and what to bear in mind when specifying it.

Tino: a softly contoured ceramic bowl

Tino combines aesthetics and functionality. Its design is based on soft, enveloping lines that bring out the plasticity of its key material, ceramic: a wide, deep bowl with a slightly narrowed rim that sits on the worktop and becomes the centrepiece of the washstand.

According to Cielo's product sheet, it is a countertop bowl without overflow, glazed on all sides, so the exterior is visible with the same finish as the interior. Its outer diameter is 43 cm and its height 19 cm; the opening measures 40 cm and the base 22 cm.

The glazed Tino bowls are avant-garde yet elegant pieces: they bring restraint, sensuality and colour to the bathroom and, as these images show, work just as well on a wooden worktop as on a ceramic top.

Le Terre di Cielo: colour is born in the glaze

The Le Terre di Cielo colour range is, in the brand's words, the result of genuine alchemical experiments in which chemistry is placed at the service of sensibility. Cielo presents itself as the first company in the world to create a range of ceramic colours of this kind. Colour turns each bowl into a piece that stands out in the room, giving it strength and personality while balancing with the rest of the bathroom.

According to Cielo, once tested, the coloured glaze is sprayed onto the surface of the pieces once they have dried and becomes part of them after firing, at between 1,230 and 1,250 °C. Each shade results from a selection of metallic and mineral oxides, chosen specifically for it and added to the base glaze mix: cadmium-selenium for red, cobalt for blue, manganese for brown, chromium for green and praseodymium for yellow.

In 2021 the Tino product sheet listed 23 ceramic finishes:

  • Gloss white: the piece's base finish.
  • Le Terre di Cielo, 16 matt shades: Talco, Pomice, Brina, Cemento, Basalto, Lavagna, Fango, Cacao, Arenaria, Avena, Muschio, Agave, Lino, Canapa, Cipria and Polvere.
  • Le Acque di Cielo, 6 gloss shades: Oltremare, Smeraldo, Alga, Corallo, Ninfea and Anemone. Their gloss complements the matt texture of Le Terre di Cielo.

Cielo's palette goes beyond ceramics: in the 2021 product sheet the brand described its finishes as a selection covering the Le Terre di Cielo colours, lacquers and wood veneers, metals, marble and leather. Tino is made entirely of ceramic, so its colour is chosen from the glazes on the list.

The Le Bacinelle collection

Le Bacinelle brings together Cielo's countertop basins: bowls of various shapes, sizes and heights designed to sit on a worktop or a unit. Tino shares the collection with Tina, its taller version, also by Parisio and Pezzano, and with models by Luca Cimarra such as Eco, Era and Handy. The table summarises the dimensions Cielo gave for each piece in its product sheets from 2019 to 2021.

Key points for specifying Tino

Beyond colour, these are the points worth resolving at project stage:

  • Worktop: Tino rests on a base 22 cm in diameter. The technical sheet recommends a 10 cm hole in the worktop for the waste, and Cielo's instructions say to fix the piece with an elastic sealant, such as silicone, applied to the base, after installing the waste valve and checking that it is watertight.
  • Height: the bowl adds 19 cm to the worktop, so the height of the unit or support surface should be set with the final rim level in mind.
  • Taps: the technical sheet only shows the 4.5 cm waste hole, and in Cielo's images Tino is paired with wall-mounted taps. The water supply points must be defined before the wall is finished.
  • Waste and trap: Cielo offers as accessories a universal click-clack waste with a ceramic cap (PIL01 in chrome, PIL01NM in matt black, PIL01BR in bronze and PIL01CM in Cemento) and traps in the same finishes (SISP, SIFN, SIFBR and SIFCM).
  • Handcrafted piece: Cielo warns that there may be slight variations in colour or shade between pieces, inherent to manual production. If several bowls are installed in the same bathroom, they should be ordered together.
  • Cleaning: the manufacturer recommends a mild sanitaryware detergent, warm water and a soft or microfibre cloth, and advises against abrasive or aggressive products, which can damage and dull the ceramic. In hard-water areas, regular cleaning prevents limescale deposits.

Cielo and its art directors

Ceramica Cielo is an Italian manufacturer of bathroom ceramics based in Fabrica di Roma (Viterbo). Its mission, according to the brand itself, is to take ceramics beyond their known limits by exploring new forms, sizes, thicknesses, surfaces and colours, and to express in its products its ability to work this material with contemporary, timeless design.

Tino is designed by Andrea Parisio and Giuseppe Pezzano, Cielo's art directors since 2015. Parisio, born in Lodi in 1964, trained at the Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) in Milan and at the Academy in Pavia; after a long career in interior design and furniture consultancy, in 2000 he set up Meridiani, whose image and stylistic line he directed. Pezzano, an architect born in Locri in 1974 who graduated in Florence, headed the Milan office of Archea Associati, where he coordinated major public and architectural works, and in 2010 founded his own studio in Milan.

Epilogue (2026): Tino is still in Cielo's catalogue. The brand has added Tino Mini, 30 cm in diameter and 14.5 cm high, and the Essential colors gloss range, which in the current Tino product sheet includes white, black, Fumo, Talpa and Cioccolato.
