Colori Green Lux washbasins, delicacy and colour in form
Green Lux by Catalano: washbasins with 5 mm edges and curved forms, countertop, semi-recessed or freestanding, in gloss white and seven satin finishes.

The Green Lux washbasin collection is another proposal from Catalano, an Italian sanitaryware manufacturer that makes all its pieces in Italy, and it stands out for pieces distinguished by their lines and design: curved surfaces, edges just 5 mm thick and a wide, soft bowl. With the Colori collection, the brand took these washbasins beyond white, with seven satin finishes that turn the basin into one more decorative element of the bathroom.
In this article we look at where the Green family comes from, which finishes Green Lux offered, which pieces made up the series and their dimensions, how its glazes are produced and protected and what to bear in mind when specifying it.

The Green family: curves and thin edges
The Green family is characterised by curved surfaces and thin edges inspired by forms found in nature. Catalano organised it into three systems: the Green washbasins, for countertop, wall-hung, on-unit or pedestal installation; Green Up, with thin edges and side shelves; and Green Lux, designed to be installed on a countertop or semi-recessed.
Its design has been endorsed by two international awards. The Green family, which The Chicago Athenaeum attributes to the Rome-based studio Carlo Martino & Partners, received the Good Design 2015 award. Green Lux, launched in 2016, won the iF Design Award 2017 in the product discipline.
In the iF award entry, Catalano explains that Green Lux is the result of its Green Thinking philosophy: design experimentation that applies sustainability criteria, such as thin edges, which mean less material and less weight. According to the brand, those edges of just 5 mm are a symbol of the technical capability achieved in its factory, and together with the softness of the bowl they define the image of the series both in plan and in profile.

Colori: seven satin finishes for Green Lux
The standard version of Green Lux is gloss white. With the Colori collection, Catalano extended the palette with glazes that, according to the manufacturer, stand out for their resistance to scratches, acids and thermal shock. There are seven satin finishes: White, Cement, Brown, Green, Blue, Grey and Black, ranging from soft tones to neutrals. With gloss white, the series was thus offered in eight different finishes.
Colori applied these colours to the eleven countertop and semi-recessed Green Lux washbasins and to the Sfera wall-hung WCs and bidets, so that basin and sanitaryware could be in the same tone. Wastes in the same colour as the ceramic were provided for the washbasins, and matching seats for the WCs. The series' freestanding washbasin was offered in a shorter range: gloss white and satin white, cement and black.

Which pieces make up the series
Green Lux comprises countertop and semi-recessed pieces, square and rectangular, in widths ranging from 40 to 80 cm, as well as a freestanding washbasin. None has an overflow. The table summarises the series as Catalano presented it in 2021.
The freestanding washbasin, Green Lux 55, carries the same thin-edged language over to a freestanding piece that rests on the floor. It is made in two versions, depending on whether the waste goes to the floor or the wall, and in both the fixings are included.

Glaze, firing and cleaning
The pieces undergo rigorous quality controls. Catalano applies the glaze to the dried raw piece and fires it just once in tunnel kilns at 1,250 °C for about 22 hours, a process that gives great durability and strength. After firing, each piece is inspected by hand and only those that meet the quality standards go on to packaging.
The washbasins have thin, rounded edges and a smooth, even finish. They also come as standard with Cataglaze+ Silver Titanium, a glaze with silver and titanium ions that Catalano applies to all its products. According to the brand, its antibacterial action is certified to ISO 22196 with 99.99% efficacy, it reduces limescale and it resists the chemical agents in cleaning products. Together with the form of the piece itself, continuous and without an overflow, it reduces the chances of dirt building up and makes cleaning easier.
Key points for specifying Green Lux
Before settling on the model, these points are worth resolving at project stage:
- Type of installation: some models are countertop only, some semi-recessed only and others allow both options. The washbasin should be chosen before the worktop and its cut-out are defined.
- No overflow: no Green Lux washbasin has one, so the waste must be suitable for basins without an overflow. For the Colori finishes, Catalano provided wastes in the same colour.
- Freestanding washbasin: the version with a floor waste requires Catalano's connection kit (chrome-plated brass waste and flexible trap), which the technical sheet marks as mandatory.
- Coordinated colour: the Sfera wall-hung WCs and bidets were offered in the same seven satin finishes, with matching seats, making it possible to resolve the whole bathroom in a single tone.
- Standard: Catalano's technical sheets state that Green Lux washbasins comply with EN 14688, which sets out the functional requirements and test methods for washbasins.

Catalano, sanitaryware made in Italy
Catalano was founded in 1967 in Fabrica di Roma, in the ceramics district north of Rome, and conceives, designs and manufactures all its products in a single plant. Design, development and prototyping are carried out in-house, and each piece is engraved with the Made in Italy mark that guarantees its origin.
The brand's environmental commitment is evident in its own motto, Green Thinking, which aims to be sustainable throughout the production cycle, optimising the manufacturing chain and reducing waste and pollutants. According to the manufacturer, it recycles all production waste within the process itself. Catalano has held ISO 14001 environmental certification since 2015 and in 2019 became the first Italian sanitaryware company to obtain an environmental product declaration (EPD).
