La Pietra Compattata: sustainable surfaces that reinterpret natural stone

La Pietra Compattata is an Italian brand specialising in architectural surfaces made from natural raw materials: porphyry, quartz and granite recovered from stone processing. These offcuts are ground, mixed into a proprietary blend and compacted by pressing, without firing, to create flooring and wall cladding suitable for both interiors and exteriors. The brand combines contemporary design, sustainability and craftsmanship.

In this article we explain how it is made, the difference between its two technical surfaces —in_PIETRA for interiors and out_PIETRA for exteriors—, the finishes available and what to plan for a sound installation. We then look at the three collections you can see at Matter: Cromie, Formae and Ri_Tagli.

Recovered stone, pressed and never fired

The raw material is cutting and processing waste from porphyry, quartz and granite that other industries would discard. La Pietra Compattata grinds it, mixes it into a proprietary blend and compacts it by wet pressing. The pieces are then dried at ambient temperature rather than fired in a kiln: according to the manufacturer, the process produces no CO2 or other pollutant emissions.

The company is based in Sassuolo (Modena), in Emilia-Romagna. It is a family business: in 2013 it passed from father to children and is now run by siblings Federico and Francesca. Tumbling (burattatura), cutting, technical finishes and protective treatments are manual processes that complement industrial production.

A low-impact production cycle

Beyond the recovered raw material, the manufacturer describes its production cycle as follows:

  • No firing: the material is wet-pressed and dried at ambient temperature.
  • Recovered raw material: porphyry, quartz and granite offcuts are reused as aggregate.
  • Reused water: a recovery system reuses the water from cutting and tumbling; declared annual consumption is around 300 m³.
  • Waste put to use: good-quality but damaged pieces go into cut formats; the rest returns to the process or is used as road sub-base.
  • Reduced packaging: no cardboard, recycled plastic film and returnable wooden pallets.

For certifications such as LEED or BREEAM, ask the manufacturer for the product's technical documentation: La Pietra Compattata states that it has tested the product to current European standards and supplies copies of the certificates on request.

in_PIETRA and out_PIETRA: indoors and outdoors

Every collection is made with one of two technical surfaces. in_PIETRA leaves the factory with two treatment cycles and is finished on site with Ceramatt wax, included in the order; it is designed for interiors, including kitchens and showers. out_PIETRA is untreated: it is breathable, frost-resistant, non-slip and salt-resistant, and is designed for outdoor use.

On request, the 15 mm thickness can be used outdoors and the 22 mm indoors. For façade cladding the manufacturer recommends 15 mm out_PIETRA; for areas with vehicle traffic, always 22 mm. The material is compatible with underfloor heating, and shade variation between pieces is inherent to the natural stones it is made from.

Surfaces and finishes

The texture of each piece depends on the collection. These are the surfaces the brand works with:

  • Compact: homogeneous surface and regular edges, the result of pressing (Cromie and other collections).
  • Consolare: aged look and rounded edges thanks to artisan tumbling; every piece is different (Cromie and other collections).
  • Naturale: homogeneous surface and regular edges in the stone colours of the Pietre collection.
  • Fiammata: fine grooves that catch the light and create a dynamic effect (Pietre and Ri_Tagli).
  • 3D effect: raised or recessed reliefs depending on the pattern, in the Trame collection.

Compact and Consolare have the same technical performance: the difference is purely aesthetic. To complete the surface, the brand offers Più, a line of fine-grain grouts in the colours of its collections, so the joint can either blend into the piece or become a contrasting line.

Installation essentials

La Pietra Compattata is laid with adhesive, like a tile, but it has its own rules. These are the manufacturer's guidelines worth planning for at design stage:

  • Substrate: a stable, dry, cured and clean screed, well smoothed, or an elastic or technical membrane. Outdoors, also on a smoothed concrete slab, with falls that ensure water run-off.
  • Adhesive: C2 TE S1 cementitious adhesive with a 10 mm notched trowel. For formats with 50.5 and 67.2 cm sides, a fast-setting C2 FT S1 adhesive, a 15 mm half-moon trowel and double buttering.
  • Joints: 2 to 5 mm indoors depending on the pattern (butt-jointed without grout is also possible) and 3 to 5 mm outdoors. Expansion joints every 3-4 linear metres, or where the site supervisor specifies.
  • Cutting and orientation: with a wet saw and diamond blade. The white or black marks on the back show the side to be bonded.
  • Grouting and finishing: grout once the adhesive is dry, in areas of about 0.25 m², cleaning immediately. On in_PIETRA, wait at least 48 hours before applying Ceramatt wax.

Adhesive classes follow EN 12004: C2 is an improved cementitious adhesive, T means reduced slip, E extended open time, F fast setting and S1 deformable. Store the material under cover in a dry place to prevent efflorescence.

The collections you can see at Matter

La Pietra Compattata has a dozen collections. At Matter we work with three that show its range well: the colour and formats of Cromie, the small-scale geometry of Formae and the graphic patterns of Ri_Tagli. The Cromie 2025 catalogue itself features a private house photographed and supplied by Matter.

Cromie

Twenty colours and the brand's widest range of formats.

Cromie is La Pietra Compattata's broadest and most versatile collection. Its 20-colour palette runs from neutrals —Bianco, Grigio, Nero, Avorio, Mandorla, Testa di Moro— to earth tones such as Salmone, Mattone Cotto, Terra di Siena and Rosso, six greens, two blues (Blu Avio and Blu Oltremare), Giallo and Arancio. It comes in Compact and Consolare finishes, in in_PIETRA and out_PIETRA and in 15 and 22 mm thicknesses, for indoor and outdoor use.

Formats range from 8×8 to 33.3×67.2 cm (the latter only in Compact), with elongated pieces such as 6×25, 5.4×16.5 and 8×33.3 cm, hexagons in three sizes, 8.5×8.5 cm setts (sanpietrino), loose pebbles and meshes such as the 96×56 cm coda di pavone fan pattern. Special pieces include 30 and 22 mm steps and 15 and 22 mm skirtings.

Cromie features in some of the brand's best-known projects. At the 25hours Hotel Piazza San Paolino in Florence, with interiors by Paola Navone and OTTO Studio, it covers the floors in the 25×25 cm Consolare format. At the Six Senses hotel in Rome, Patricia Urquiola chose it in a bespoke colour for the suite terraces.

Formae

Small geometric figures for bespoke surfaces.

Formae is one of the brand's most distinctive collections. It works with simple geometric figures that reinterpret the craftsmanship of La Pietra Compattata: small pieces that, joined or mixed, make it possible to compose bespoke wall and floor coverings that combine craft and contemporary geometry.

In its current version, the collection brings together four figures in seven sizes: Tondo (Ø 21 and 34 mm), Rettangolo (11×25 and 53×25 mm) and Quadro (11×11 and 25×25 mm), supplied on mesh, and Rombo (83 mm side), supplied loose. It is made in 15 mm with the in_PIETRA surface, for interiors, in 14 solid colours and 5 mixes: Solare, Quieto, Deciso, Fiero and Profondo. The first edition of the collection also included triangles and hexagons.

Ri_Tagli

A graphic, zero-waste collection.

Ri_Tagli is based on silhouettes cut out from existing shapes. It starts from two formats, 8×33.3 and 16.5×33.3 cm, used whole or with angled cuts; these small variations allow great compositional freedom, and the manufacturer presents it as a zero-waste collection.

The catalogue proposes 30 compositions grouped in three families and 12 laying patterns, in the Compact colours of Cromie and the Naturale and Fiammata stones of the Pietre collection, which can be mixed. Grout becomes part of the design: a contrasting joint draws lines that separate and unite at the same time. It is made in 15 mm with the in_PIETRA surface, for interiors.

More collections and bespoke projects

The brand's catalogue includes other lines: Pietre, with natural stone colours in Naturale and Fiammata finishes; Pigmento, Gessetti, Tella and Ritmo, in Compact and Consolare; Trame, with reliefs; Strati, with an unfired glaze; Zdora, in mesh modules; and Tesa. With Pietra Sartoriale, designers can also develop their own shapes, colours and finishes with the company's technical team in its in-house ideas lab, as with the colour of the Six Senses terraces.

Frequently asked questions

Can it be used outdoors?
Yes, with the out_PIETRA surface, which is untreated, breathable, frost-resistant, non-slip and salt-resistant. Outdoor floors use the 22 mm thickness, which is required where vehicles pass; for façade cladding the manufacturer recommends 15 mm out_PIETRA.
Is it suitable for kitchens and showers?
Yes. The in_PIETRA surface arrives on site factory-treated and is finished with Ceramatt wax, included in the order. It can be used for shower floors and walls.
Is it compatible with underfloor heating?
Yes, the manufacturer states that the material is compatible with underfloor heating systems and can be laid on a heated screed.
What is the difference between Compact and Consolare?
It is purely aesthetic. Compact has a homogeneous surface and straight edges; Consolare is tumbled by hand, which rounds the edges and gives it an aged look. Technical performance is the same and both can be used indoors and outdoors.
How is it cleaned and maintained?
in_PIETRA should be cleaned only with neutral detergents, never acids or aggressive degreasers; to keep the wax effect, add Ceramatt to the mopping water every two to three months. out_PIETRA is largely cleaned by rain and, for deep cleaning, with a pressure washer.

The texture of compacted stone, the aged edge of the Consolare surface or the effect of a coloured joint are best appreciated with the pieces in your hands. At Matter you can see the Cromie, Formae and Ri_Tagli collections and compare colours, formats and finishes with your technical team.
